The Ambani Empire grows

Mukesh Ambani, India’s richest and the world’s 9th richest man, is positioning himself to enter the hugely lucrative banking industry.
He has used an interesting vehicle – the D. E. Shaw group “a global investment and technology development firm” founded by eminent scientist D.E Shaw. The Shaw group will be building a financial services outpost in India in partnership with Ambani.
Shaw himself is no longer actively involved in the investment fund, but is at the helm of an independent research laboratory, D. E. Shaw Research (“DESRES”) , that conducts basic scientific research in the field of computational biochemistry.
The stated aims of the laboratory are:
• The design of novel algorithms and machine architectures for high-speed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of proteins and other biological macromolecules
• The application of such simulations to basic scientific research in structural biology and biochemistry, and to the process of computer-aided drug design
It is widely believed that Mukesh Ambani will attempt to acquire his brother Anil’s telecom business, thereby winning in the sibling rivalry stakes.
Who says there is no money in science?!
